But at Microsoft Build this week, I was lucky enough to experience a sleek, untethered model.\r\n\r\nThe whole experience was incredibly controlled, and it was a major production, with about 100 Microsoft employees on hand. A group of nine tech journalists were shepherded down Howard Street to the plush Intercontinental Hotel, half of which seemed to have been taken over by Microsoft for the event. No photos and recording devices were permitted in the demos, so we had to stow our smartphones and cameras in lockers before the experience. We were, however, able to photograph a HoloLens in a case.\r\n\r\nBefore trying out the headset for ourselves, we were treated to a staged demo in a living room setting. Presenters Bill and Dan were having a Skype conversation that was projected on \"video cards\" that appeared in the air, which they walked around, grabbed, and placed in different positions. But that wasn\'t all: They also shared a 3D printing model and a custom Minecraft scene.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWearing the HoloLens\r\nBefore you can wear a HoloLens, your IPD needs to be measured—that\'s the distance between your two pupils. Microsoft staff used the same device to do this that any optometrist would. It makes you realize that, as with Google Glass, you won\'t be able to just grab a HoloLens off the shelf; you\'ll need a fitting. Once my measurement was taken, the headset could be adjusted to my IPD. It has a headband that fits snugly, and a separate collar to adjust the angle of the HoloLens optics. I was frankly surprised at how light and comfortable the device was to wear.\r\n\r\nGestures and Control\r\nYou interact with the HoloLens in three ways:\r\n
\r\n
Gaze—You move your head to move the display around.
\r\n
Gesture—The key gesture is the \"air tap,\" in which you point your index finger straight up and then move it down horizontally. I didn\'t really have a problem getting it to work, though.
\r\n
Voice—Just as with Xbox One, you can tell the HoloLens what you want it to perform. I didn\'t get to try this out, but the Skype demo showed its possibilities.
\r\n
\r\n \r\n\r\nThe Experience\r\nTo start using the HoloLens after it\'s snugly attached to your head, you need to adjust it so that a rectangle with the Windows logo in the center is completely within your vision field. I and some of the other journalists were struck by the fact that your vision field isn\'t completely covered by the HoloLens, as Microsoft\'s stage demos implied. I occasionally had to move my head around to see a whole 3D projection. But part of the HoloLens\'s design is to let you see the real world as well as virtual 3D objects, so that may not be a bad thing. I did also notice some color shift similar to chromatic aberration along the edges of the box, but when viewing 3D objects that wasn\'t a factor.\r\n\r\nTo start my demo, my experience guide, James, showed me an architectural modeling application on a PC with a regular 2D display. The app was built by Trimble, a large architectural and engineering software firm. Next to the PC screen was a physical architectural model that James said would cost about $12,000 to construct. HoloLens enabled me to visualize how adding new building elements would look within the model. I was able to place and resize 3D objects in the physical model and get a perfect view of the redesign. It\'s hard not to see the value proposition there.\r\n\r\nNext I was taken into a brick-walled room where an architectural firm wanted to add a door. The software had a model for the building\'s internal structure, including electric and plumbing, so I could see that there was an important pipe behind the wall, right where we were considering placing the door. At this point, James showed me the notification feature; a message popped up in mid-air from a coworker to discuss the problem. An air-tap let me answer, recording my own message. Then an avatar of the coworker appeared. It was a pretty crude wire-form humanoid, but you could easily see where other software or game developers, for example, would create more life-like human representations than an architectural app with basic collaboration would.\r\n\r\nHoloLens is as immersive as that of VR headsets like Oculus Rift, but that\'s actually a real plus for applications like those I experienced. Yet it\'s definitely a richer, more immersive experience than that offered by Google Glass.\r\n\r\nI will say that I did encounter a bit of vertigo while using the headset, and it wasn\'t something I\'d want to be wearing all day, or even for the duration of a movie. But for applications like those I experienced, I can honestly say there\'s nothing like it, and its uses will only multiply.\r\n\r\nMicrosoft is keeping any availability information about the HoloLens very close to its vest. It had nothing to share about release date other than to say it will be available \"within the Windows 10 timeframe.\" No pricing guidance is being announced, either, nor even where you\'ll be able to get one. But the progress that the company has made on the device since January is undeniably impressive. For instance, Microsoft previously released features to allow its Azure platform to run Linux servers. But I was impressed by how many of the sessions now talked about not only how to take applications on different operating systems and bring them into Windows 10, but on how to use Microsoft services and tools to create cross-platform applications; and how many showed how you can use Microsoft products in conjunction with other languages and tools, particularly those from the open source community.\r\n\r\nBack when the browser first appeared, Microsoft started talking about a strategy to \"embrace and extend\" various Web standards. That didn\'t really work out so well—Internet Explorer got bogged down with Microsoft proprietary standards, such as ActiveX, and couldn\'t move fast enough as new standards started to appear. Indeed, that\'s something Microsoft is finally addressing with the new Edge browser that is part of Windows 10—it\'s a much faster, more standards-based browser.\r\n\r\nThis time around, Microsoft seems to have really understood that a lot of developers prefer to work in other people\'s tools, particularly open source and Web-based ones. Instead of really trying to convince them they should move completely to Microsoft tools— likely a losing battle—it is instead working hard to make its developer tools work with the other tools that are out there, letting developers mix and match the services they like.\r\n\r\nAmong the specifics were lots of things dealing with open source platforms. For instance, Microsoft had Docker CEO Ben Golub and Azure CTO Mark Russinovich on stage to show how you can use standard Docker to take any Windows app, \"dockerize\" it, and then run it on any server, including .NET running on a Linux server.\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n \r\n\r\nMicrosoft showed both Windows and Android emulators running in Visual Studio, taking advantage of the Apache Cordova, a set of device APIs that mobile app developers can use to access native device functions.\r\n\r\nThe company announced Visual Studio Code, a free lightweight code editor that runs natively on Mac and Linux, and then can connect to Visual Studio Online and Azure services. These include a new SQL Data Warehouse service (which will compete with things like AWS Redshift), which was demoed to show how it might work with machine learning; and a new Data Lake service that can work with event hub and stream analytics services to capture information, and can work with the Cloudera and Hortonworks versions of Hadoop. In addition, Azure SQL Database now includes an elastic database option and new security features.\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n \r\n\r\nThe keynote on the second day included more such features, with David Treadwell, Corporate VP of Microsoft\'s Operating System Group, and Kevin Gallo, director of Developer Ecosystem and Platform, talking about how Windows 10 has 2,500+ new platform features and 8,000 new functions, with new things ranging from Cortana integration to faster media streaming to DirectX 12, the new APIs for gaming. (A demo from Square Enix was really impressive.)\r\n\r\nThey showed how relatively easy it now is to create \"universal\" applications that can scale from everything from PCs and phones to the 84-inch Surface Hub, the Raspberry Pi 2 IoT device, and HoloLens. But again, they also stressed the ease of moving applications to Windows from the Web, existing Win32 apps, a Java or C++ app designed for Android and Objective-C code written for Apple\'s iOS. In all these cases, they showed again how it would be relatively easy for a developer to add Windows-specific features—such as Live Tiles, or Cortana integration—to the existing code.\r\n\r\nLater, Microsoft\'s Steve Guggenheimer and John Shewchuk showed off new tools for building cross-platform applications, with some new JavaScript libraries and an enterprise version of GitHub.\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n \r\n\r\nPerhaps the most interesting examples came from Joseph Sirosh, a Corporate VP who heads machine learning, who showed off a number of applications about predictive analytics, including a Fujitsu application for \"the connected cow\" that uses the Azure cloud. He also showed how the R language can be used to create APIs, and demonstrated an application that used his own genome to identify potential medical risks. First it let Android developers wrap their apps for submission to BlackBerry\'s store. Then it realized even that was too high a barrier and just started including the Amazon Appstore on its devices. That hasn\'t catapulted BlackBerry to glorious heights, but one could argue it\'s part of what has kept the platform alive, at least.\r\n\r\nEven two platforms has been too much for some developers. Many apps come to iOS first because, as a recent Digi-Capital study showed, one iOS user is worth 2.5 Android users to a developer. It\'s just about prioritizing developer time.\r\n\r\n(And before you say it: I\'m an Android user most of the time, so I find this really frustrating.)\r\n\r\nSo today, at the Build conference, Microsoft is showing how iOS and Android apps can be easily recompiled for or run on its platform, although they will still have to be submitted to Microsoft\'s store. That makes me a little bit sad, because one of the appealing aspects of Microsoft\'s OS was its bold, unique graphic design, where you swipe between panels rather than pop down menus.\r\n\r\nThe Danger of Porting\r\nOne thing I noticed when Android ports started to appear on BlackBerry was that they weren\'t perfectly adapted to BlackBerry\'s UI. A flood of direct Android and iOS ports may have the same problem on Windows Phone: you\'ll end up having a phone whith one UI across the \"native\" apps and a dramatically different second UI in third-party apps. That isn\'t great, and Microsoft needs to address it.\r\n\r\nYes, I\'m sure Microsoft wants coders to re-use parts of their Android or iOS code and make beautiful, custom Windows Mobile apps out of it, but I\'m not sure that\'s a realistic goal. If you give people a lazy out, it\'s likely they\'ll take it. But it\'s not like Microsoft has any other choice.\r\n\r\nThe real, painful question here is whether a third mobile platform is at all viable. It\'s hard to unravel that question from Microsoft\'s string of embarrassing failures at producing and selling high-end hardware in the U.S. over the past year. The success of the Lumia 635 shows that there\'s definitely a demand for a third platform at the low end. Carriers have also said they\'d like to see a counterweight to Apple and Android, although the carriers need to actually put their money where their mouth is and not do things like AT&T\'s pricing sabotage of the Lumia 830.\r\n\r\nSo yeah, how about those phones, Microsoft?\r\n\r\n
','Microsoft\'s Dangerous, But Necessary Android App Route','','inherit','open','open','','45-revision-v1','','','2015-05-03 07:47:37','2015-05-03 07:47:37','',45,'http://03a8eb5.netsolhost.com/sitepages/?p=46',0,'revision','',0),(47,1,'2015-05-03 07:49:42','2015-05-03 07:49:42','','1','','inherit','open','open','','1-3','','','2015-05-03 07:49:42','2015-05-03 07:49:42','',45,'http://03a8eb5.netsolhost.com/sitepages/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/11.jpg',0,'attachment','image/jpeg',0),(48,1,'2015-05-03 07:55:56','2015-05-03 07:55:56','
Microsoft stopped actively developing Windows Media Center in 2009, but the company still shipped an unmodified version in an upgrade pack for Windows 8.
